Market Access

Market access is simply the ability to sell your product, either locally or internationally. TGS can assist in improving your access to the market.

Well Design and Implementation

What it is

The first step when implementing any irrigation system is assessing available water sources in terms of water quantity and quality. When a viable water source is not readily available, the best course of action is drilling a custom well suited to your irrigation system.

How it Works

When drilling a well it’s necessary to consider the water quantity and quality that you require, necessary depth, and well location. All of these factors are considered by well drilling contractors, who are familiar with the regional well regulations, local hydrogeology, necessary borehole diameters for different applications, and every aspect of the drilling process.

What we do

TGS excels at water management and well design, so if you are looking for a complete irrigation solution for your crops, look no further. We do everything from well design to implementation, guiding you through the process to achieve the best possible system for your context. First, we connect with reliable well drilling (well boring?) contractors in your region to complete all preliminary analyses–such as soil analysis and determination of location, depth, and borehole measurements for your well–and drill the well. We then evaluate the well in person to ensure that it is of the highest quality, before installing the pump and piping ourselves. We then test it to ensure that the flow rate and water quality meets the agreed upon standards before pouring the cement block and attaching the well to a filtration system. We complete the installation and attachment to your newly-installed or pre-existing irrigation system.

Filtration Systems

What it is

Do you want to improve your irrigation water quality for better yields and healthier crops? Adding a filtration system at the interface of your irrigation system and well, or improving an existing filtration system that isn’t working, will increase the lifespan of your irrigation system and improve the clarity, heavy-metal content, or sediment load in your water for healthier crops and higher yields.

How it Works

There are four primary types of filtration systems used for irrigation systems:

  1. Screen filters are used to remove sand, sediment, or other solid particulate from water.

  1. Centrifugal separators are most often used in pre-filtration to remove larger sand particles before entering a filter with a finer mesh further down the line. Centrifugal separators require a steady flow rate within a specified pressure range to ensure optimal function

  1. Disc-filters consist of a stack of discs with tiny grooves which determine the effective mesh size of the filter. Disc-filters are maintained either manually by separating the discs and reversing water flow through them or automatically via backflushing. Backflushing for disc-filters is much faster and requires a lower pressure than for sand-media filters.

  1. Sand-media filters consist of partially-filled tanks of silica or crushed granite filtration-grade sand of a specified size depending on the necessary filtration capacity. The necessary filtration capacity is determined based on system requirements such as flow rate and the diameter of the smallest orifice in the irrigation system. Sand media filters automatically or semi-automatically backflush to clean the filter using filtered water from another filter in series, so at least two are required.

What We Do

By evaluating your current irrigation system and water quality, we can determine your needs, design a system tailored to your existing setup, and install the most effective filtration system for you. After creating a plan, we help with the financial and logistical management of sourcing and installing the system correctly and to code, with actual on-site assistance which guarantees your system is functioning properly as soon as possible. Additionally, we train you on the maintenance and troubleshooting of the filtration system, how to clean the system (if a manual filtration system is chosen), and provide advice on an as-needed basis. Let us design the best filtration system for you, meeting your context-specific flow rate and water quality needs.

Drip Irrigation

What it is

Drip irrigation systems are typically used for high-intensity crops like vegetables, soft fruits, orchards, and any crops planted on steep slopes where runoff can prevent water penetration and result in soil erosion.

A drip irrigation system maximizes water use efficiency by slowly dripping water into the root zone of crops so that it is optimally retained with minimal evaporative loss. Drip irrigation is often combined with fertigation for precision nutrient delivery, increasing yields and crop quality while giving you the maximum benefit of your fertilizer investment.

How it Works

There are two main types of drip irrigation systems on the market today, Pressure-Compensated (PC) and Non Pressure-Compensated (NPC):

  1. In PC systems, a stable flow rate is maintained within a large pressure range, ensuring uniform water distribution along the line regardless of long lateral runs or elevation changes. Self-regulating flow allows the use of more drippers in one line without compromising dripping flow rate stability. The downside of PC irrigation systems is they are more easily clogged than NPC systems due to the internal maze filters controlling outlet flow.
  2. NPC systems require a more precise design and regular maintenance to fine-tune the system and ensure consistent watering. However, a benefit of NPC systems is that they can tolerate higher sediment loads than PC systems without clogging due to the simpler mechanism for water flow.

Both Pressure-Compensated and Non Pressure-Compensated systems can be installed beneath the soil as Subsurface Drip Irrigation (SDI), directly on top of the soil, or suspended above the soil on a raised wire. These three forms of installation are illustrated at the right.

Additionally, there are two types of drip irrigation pipes used, either inline pipes with internal drippers which ensure similar pressure at each dripping point, or a central line with individual drippers extending from it. Drippers can be spaced at standard distances along the irrigation line or customized for your layout and planting density, depending on the application. For orchards a double drip line is necessary to ensure that the wetted diameter covers the area of each tree’s root system.

What We Do

Effective irrigation is especially important for high-value crops where water and nutrient fluctuations during primary growth periods can cause devastating product loss. Let us help you minimize the risk of unpredictable weather patterns with state-of-the-art Rivulis Eurodrip irrigation systems tailored to your crop needs and context. Micro Sprinkler Irrigation

What it is

Micro sprinklers are small sprinklers frequently used for orchards and vegetables which ensure better root growth with deeper water penetration and allow for frost protection. Sprinkler emitters 15-30 cm above the soil surface apply water to the soil surface in a small spray or mist.

How it Works

Micro sprinklers are spaced periodically along a main irrigation line and produce a wetted diameter of three to six meters, much smaller than that of traditional sprinklers. In orchards it is typical to have two lines of micro sprinklers on either side of each row of trees to ensure that the wetted diameter covers the area of the tree’s root system. Micro sprinklers are well suited for sloping fields, can be used for frost protection of small crops and trees, and can be used for precise application of fertilizer.

What We Do

The best irrigation system is the one that works for you–giving you the best return on investment in terms of precision watering and nutrient delivery, decreased labour costs, minimized risk, and improved product quality. If this sounds like something you need, feel free to contact us and we can schedule a consultation to assess your needs in terms of climate, crop type, water access, fertigation needs, and so much more. As a certified dealer of Rivulis Eurodrip systems with extensive experience designing and installing irrigation systems, we are able to create a custom irrigation system perfectly tailored to your needs and manage the logistics of delivery, installation, and training. Sprinkler Systems

What it is

Of all the types of irrigation systems, sprinklers most closely resemble natural rainfall. Sprinkler systems distribute water via main irrigation lines to sprayer nozzles throughout the field to ensure maximal soil coverage and can be used for frost protection and fertigation.

How it Works

Sprinkler systems are either static, and must be moved manually, or automatic, such as sprinkler reel systems or center-pivot systems.

What We Do

Effective irrigation is vital for high-value crops where water and nutrient fluctuations during primary growth periods can result in devastating product loss. Let us help you minimize the risk of unpredictable weather patterns with top performing Rivulis Eurodrip sprinkler irrigation systems tailored to your crop needs and context. Contact us and we’ll schedule a consultation to determine your irrigation needs, design a system perfectly suited to your unique region and irrigation needs, source materials both locally and internationally, and manage the logistics and financial operations to ensure that the process is as easy and efficient as possible. We are with you every step of the way, from initial design to installing your new irrigation system on-site, applying our practical know-how to build a system that lasts while training you in best practices to maintain your system.

Quick comparison

Static Sprinkler Systems

  • Wetted radius of 27-60 m (for each sprinkler)
  • Least expensive initial installation costs
  • Significant labour involved in rotating sprinklers for more coverage
  • Able to tolerate slopes and undulating ground
  • High labour cost: moving and end of season storage, maintenance, cleaning. Low resale value
How it works

Static sprinkler systems require a high input pressure to power gear driven rotors and turn a nozzle head in a circle, producing a wetted radius of 27-60 meters for each sprinkler head. These sprinklers are usually in operation on very large plots and involve a significant labour investment, though the initial investment is smaller than other sprinkler irrigation systems.

Sprinkler Reel Systems

  • Wetted radius of 27-60 m (for each sprinkler)
  • Moderately expensive initial investment
  • Moderate labour cost
  • Moderate ability to tolerate slopes and ground swells
How it works

In sprinkler reel systems, a water-powered mechanical hydraulic system is employed for moving a sprinkler gun cart attached to the hose reel via a flexible hose along each row. The wetted area produced moves along the length of the flexible hose and the sprinkler gun cart is able to accommodate slight inclines and ground swells so levelling is not required for fields without significant slope.

Center-Pivot Systems

  • Approximately 100-450 m² (covers 3.5-60 Ha depending on size)
  • Most expensive initial investment
  • Very low labour cost once installed
  • Not ideal for sloping fields, can tolerate some undulations but not slopes
  • Square fields require additional irrigation for approximately 21.3% of the field (corners)
How it works

Center-pivot irrigation systems irrigate crops in a circle around a central pivot point. Though installation and removal is relatively easy and these systems have a high resale value, they do involve a larger initial investment compared with the previous two systems described. Center pivot irrigation systems consist of pipe segments mounted on wheeled towers with sprinklers at intervals positioned along the length of the pipes. The structure is typically propelled by water pressure and moves in a circular path at a rate determined by the inlet pressure. The volume of water applied to the crops is controlled by the speed of rotation, and center pivot systems can be adjusted depending on the height of the crop, soil type, and other factors. Each system can effectively irrigate between 100 and 450 m² of land.

Hydroponics

What it is

Hydroponics is a highly scalable and efficient soilless plant culture alternative to traditional agriculture. This system of cultivating high-value crops allows for precise control of all parameters to minimize risk of crop loss due to weather, insects, disease, and nutrient or water deficiency. Hydroponics is a labour saving form of cultivation which results in a high density crop and allows year round cultivation in rural or urban contexts and is typically used in greenhouses to cultivate a variety of leafy greens, vining plants like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and zucchinis, as well as strawberries and soft fruits.

How it Works

In a hydroponics system, instead of planting in soil, crops are grown on a partially submerged substrate or suspended in a solution with nutrients delivered directly to the root system. This system allows the grower to control all variables related to plant growth and development, such as nutrient load, temperature, pH, and water quality.

There are three primary types of hydroponic systems:

  1.  In a Substrate System coco-peat, rock wool, or another substrate is injected with a plant nutrient solution and is used to support the plant’s root system. This method is generally utilized for vining crops like tomatoes and peppers, but can be used for any type of hydroponics-accessible crop.
  2. When applying Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), a series of gutters is constructed with a very slow water flow rate in which the roots hang allowing for nutrient and oxygen exchange. For this type of system a substrate is not used, and typical applications include growing strawberries, small soft fruits, and leafy greens.
  3. Deep Water Culture (DWC) systems consist of large troughs or basins containing a 20-35 cm layer of water on which the plants float. Though this method is not suitable for vining crops, it works extremely well for leafy greens and herbs. An air pump is used to allow oxygen exchange in the submerged plant’s root systems.

Hydroponics is most advisable when you have a larger initial investment available, wish to maximize your production per area, and are close to or inside an urban area for ease of market access. Hydroponics is typically done inside a greenhouse to allow for maximal control of all relevant growth parameters, but depending on the climate it can be possible outside of a greenhouse.

What We Do

With extensive experience designing and implementing hydroponics systems from small-scale projects to efficient, industrial-scale systems requiring minimal user input, TGS is able to take you from a first sketch to profitable hydroponics. Aquaponics

What it is

Aquaponics is an agricultural system which blends hydroponics (soilless agriculture) and aquaculture (farming fish) to create a mutually-beneficial and highly water-efficient hybrid plant and fish cultivation method. Aquaponics operates on the same principles as hydroponics–it is also a soil-less method for cultivating leafy greens, small soft fruits, and certain berries–but with an added layer of complexity: fish!

There are two primary types of aquaponics systems: traditional single-loop systems and multi-loop or decoupled systems, which is described below. In a traditional single-loop aquaculture system, fish waste floats to plants and water returns from the plant system back to the fish. The downside of this basic system is that you have to compromise optimal conditions to suit both the fish and crops in terms of pH, water temperature, and nutrient load.

How it Works

In hydroponics systems, plant nutrients are provided by a fine powder or liquid mixture added directly to the water and taken up by the plants. In aquaculture the nutrients can come fully or mainly from a fish-growing system. Water from a fish tank containing low-maintenance freshwater fish like tilapia or catfish is pumped out and the fish waste is converted to usable nutrients for the plants (ammonia and other fish waste components are converted to nitrates, nitrites, and other plant nutrients) before being used to water the plants. Excess water from the plants is then removed, filtered, and returned to the fish tank and the cycle continues.

In this system of simultaneous plant and fish cultivation, the fish must be fed and supplementary nutrients are often needed for the plants depending on the crop, management style, fish density, and species of fish.

What We Do

With extensive experience designing and implementing aquaponics systems from small-scale home systems to efficient, industrial-scale systems requiring minimal user input, TGS is able to take you from initial plans to profitable aquaponics. We help you design a custom system perfectly suited to your needs and context, choose the right fish and plants for your market, source materials and network with local partners (where relevant), and assist in set up and training. Decoupled Aquaponics

What it is

Decoupled aquaponics or Multiloop aquaponics is a way to take aquaponics to the next level by optimizing conditions separately for both the crops and fish. This is accomplished by separating (decoupling) the fish and plant cultures from one another so that the nutrient flow, temperature, pH, and all related parameters are optimized individually for both fish and plants.

How it Works

This system consists of separate circular fish and plant systems. After collection of water from the fish system, a valve and filter is used to prevent backflow into the fish tank and the water flows one-way into the plant system. This allows for easier plant nutrient supplementation since the nutrients added to the crop will not end up in the fish water.

Aquaponics allows for mutually beneficial fish and plant cultivation while minimizing water inefficiency and optimizing conditions for both fish and plants. However, water recycling is slightly lower in this system than in hydroponics since the plant water is discharged and does not return to the fish, though used water from the plant system can still be used to irrigate other plants.

What We Do

With extensive experience designing and implementing decoupled aquaponics systems from small-scale setups to highly efficient, industrial-scale systems requiring minimal user input, TGS is able to take you from initial plans to profitable aquaponics. We help you design a custom system perfectly suited to your needs and context, choose the right fish and plants for your market, source materials and network with local partners, and assist in set up and training so that you can start your profitable aquaponics as soon as possible. As you begin your aquaponics adventure, we’re always just a phone call away when you need advice or assistance.

    Our approach

With our clients, we usually go through a 3-step proces to help them find the right solution.
Find out more below about how this works.

    Quick-Scan

    Business calculations

    Bussiness development plan

Click the tabs above to read more about our 3-step approach.

Quick-scan is a short consultation that will take you from a basic outline to an understanding of the investment required for your business plan and the steps to get there. We perform back-of-the-envelope calculations based on our extensive experience to determine the feasibility of your business idea or potential investment. If you have already done some research and collected information such as your operating costs, utility prices, product prices, and labour requirements and wages, we can do a free quick-scan very quickly. However, if we have to collect the data for you it will take a bit longer and there will be a small fee involved.

Please contact us or fill out the form below and we’ll get back to you to set up a meeting time!

Business calculations give you insight into the local and global market, help you choose the right investment strategy, and show what growth could look like for you. At TGS, we help you ensure that your plan is profitable before you even begin, or change a plan that is not working the way you want it to.

The first thing is to look at your investment overview, which is the initial cost of starting your business or making a new investment. This could include purchasing new machinery or equipment, land, buildings, or other capital, but does not include any operational costs.

Next, we want to look at all the variables for your production line. These are costs that you expect to change month by month or year to year, like labour, the selling price of your product, delivery charges, utilities, or sourcing raw materials. These are costs that fluctuate based on market conditions.

Profit and loss calculations give an indication of profitability and your margins, information that helps you understand how solid your business is and gauge your ability to generate profit over a set period of time.

Looking at cash flow helps you understand the daily operational costs and revenue of your business. While profit and loss calculations look at long-term changes and the overall financial position of your company, cash flow is what’s going on at the micro level in your business bank account.

Finally, a flexibility test is used to look at how secure your business case is by measuring the response to fluctuations in your production costs or the sales price of your product. This test gives you insight into the overall financial stability of your company.

Make a figure to show a flexibility test with graded colors?

Market Data is all about understanding the demand for what you are producing. This involves finding your market niche and determining what product grade you need to attain given your market, what standards and certifications are necessary to reach your customer, and determining what equipment is worth the investment given your resources. We own four profitable farms and grow a wide variety of crops while applying these principles and utilizing the same business calculations we will use to optimize your company’s performance.

    Example:

Suppose you are operating an apple orchard in Uzbekistan. It is September and you have a lot of apples. You have three options: you could sell them immediately on the local market at a low price, store them in cold storage facilities and sell them later when demand is higher, or package them for export and sell your apples for a better price to a wholesaler in Russia. Determining which option is best involves understanding the local and global market and choosing what equipment to invest in and which certifications and permits to apply for.

    A. Bankable Business Plans

A bankable business plan is one which is created with financial health in mind. It is seen by banks as a “good bet” in terms of your ability to handle assets, pay off loans, and manage debt. By working with us to create a bankable business plan, you give yourself and your business the best possible chance of success when applying to funding agencies or investors. Not only does this give you the best chance of being granted funding, but gives you confidence in your ability to handle assets and grow your business for years to come.

Disclaimer: We cannot ensure that your application will be accepted since it is purely the discretion of the funding agency whether to accept or reject an applicant. However we give you the best chance of being accepted.

    B. Subsidies and Funding Opportunities

When it comes to locating and applying to subsidies, grants, and other funding opportunities for your business, the number of funding bodies, rules, regulations, and contingencies can be really challenging to navigate. Subsidies tend to be extremely specific and have a daunting level of complexity, making it easy to make a mistake or not realize that you do not meet the criteria for applying and be rejected without consideration. We have gone through this process many times before with clients and have gained the necessary experience to make locating and applying for funding as smooth as possible, and have built up a network of trusted contacts. While it can still feel like a maze at times, we’ve learned how to navigate the process of locating and applying to subsidies and grants in a way that maximizes your chance of success while minimizing mistakes and wasted time. Let us help you find your way through the maze and apply for the right grant or subsidy–as efficiently as possible, without the frustration of repeated rejections. Let us help you locate and apply for relevant grants, subsidies, and other funding opportunities and use them correctly to maximize benefit while being careful to follow all relevant laws and expectations.
